Scaring Up Horror Film Biz in Buffalo & Beyond

Beyond the usual trick or treating tonight, scary movies are a part of the Halloween tradition. While some of them have been filmed around here,  there are hopes for even more down the road.

As in Holland Road- a low budget slasher film, filmed in and around Angola, and embellishing on the Pigman legends of a killer in the rural regions of southern Erie County.

Nationwide there is a trend for using older cities with abandoned buildings for the bigger budget horror flicks.

Buffalo Niagara Film Comissioner Tim Clark tries to scare up that business and bring it here.

"There are a lot of good visual elements around Buffalo that would play well as a backdrop for a horror film," Clark says.

Over the years, Clark's had an inquiry from John Carpenter of Halloween fame, and is quick to point out that 1981's The Burning  (pictured L)  was filmed in Niagara County, around Buffalo & in parts of the southern tier.

In those days, writer and producer Harvey Weinstein wasn't too far removed from his time as a local concert promoter with Harvey and Corkey.  These days Weinstein is a multimilionaire mogul, the head of Miramax films.

The organizers of Edmonton’s horror film festival, DEDfest, never pass up an opportunity to promote the city to its visiting VIPs as an ideal place to shoot their next slash-fest or zombie-romp.

But like the horny camp counsellors at Camp Crystal Lake in Friday the 13th, Edmonton isn’t alone. There are other cities lurking out there, trying to lure and capture horror filmmakers in the same way Edmonton has been attempting in the last two years.

Buffalo, New York, is one of those cities. It features a wide variety of derelict or empty buildings owing to its once-booming past as a stop on the Erie Canal...

Canadian scream queen Debbie Rochon, who has turned her hand from horror-acting to horror-directing, recently filmed a revenge-themed movie in Buffalo called Model Hunger, which is now in post-production.    "
