(WBEN) With the adult component to Halloween getting bigger each year - you can expect a combination of trick or treaters and State Troopers on area roads tonight.
Extra DWI patrols will be out for the holiday tonight, and this weekend across Western New York .
National statistics show alcohol is a contributing factor in 52% of fatal crashes around Halloween, according to John Sullivan, director of Erie County's STOP DWI Office
When Halloween falls toward the middle of the week, the adult parties-- and the drinking and driving that they sometimes bring -- start on the weekend before Halloween. Therefore tonight's increased enforcement is actually a continuation of one that started days ago.
One particular patrol last weekend netted an unprecedented amount of arrests, Sullivan says.
"In Amherst alone, they had 15 DWI arrests at one checkpoint and it is the most arrests that I have ever heard of ," Sullivan said.
Sullivan says there is never a night without DWI enforcement in Erie County, but at Halloween time extra patrols will be substantial .
