Buffalo, NY (WBEN) On Tuesday night, Stefan Mychajliw said he was happy to stay as Erie County Comptroller. That was moments after winning a full term, but will he have that feeling two years ago?
Former Erie County GOP Chairman Bob Davis says history has shown county officials have great name recognition that can help use the comptroller's office as a stepping stone to higher office. "Anytime you're a county comptroller, clerk, or even a sheriff, like BJ Tutuska did before becoming county executive, it puts you in a position to be in a serious position to move onto higher office," says Davis.
If Mychajliw passes on a challenge to Mark Poloncarz, himself a former county comptroller, Davis says "There'll be someone else they could look at for that race in two years, like Chris Jacobs, the county clerk." Davis notes the GOP is in good position to have a challenger, with Sheriff Tim Howard, Jacobs, and Mychajliw in elected office, as well as a Republican majority in the Legislature.
