Jamestown Forum on Common Core; Additional Forum in Buffalo
Jamestown, NY (WBEN) Education Commissioner John King and Regent Bob Bennett among others heard from parents and teachers inside Jamestown High School Wednesday night for a hearing on the Common Core. We learned there will be another Common Core forum for Buffalo next week.
There were angry parents and teachers inside Jamestown High School with concerns about common core. One of the concerns regarded children with special needs. "We had some passionate presentations about children with special needs, and we share those concerns and we have requested waivers for those kids from the federal government on their developmental age versus their chronological age," says Bennett. He adds state tests have not increased as a result of Common Core, and privacy will not be violated, another question posed to King.
Bennett was unhappy about one issue. "We heard from early childhood folks who said their children aren't having fun anymore in school, they should be having fun," says Bennett. He says he'll take all the concerns into advisement and talk with other Regents across the state.
There will also be another Common Core forum in Buffalo. "It is scheduled for next Thursday, and the hosts will be the two BOCES superintendents, covering 40 districts, including Buffalo," says Bennett, who adds if all goes according to plan, will be held at the WNED studios.
