Common Core Picket in Tonawanda

Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo teachers showed up on the sidewalk in front of New York State Regent Bob Bennett's Tonawanda home.  The picket was organized by the Buffalo Teachers Federation.

BTF President Phil Rumore says the rare action is in response to the implementation of the common core learning standards in New York State and the emphasis on standardized testing that came along with it.  Regent Bennett has been on record as a staunch supporter of the common core standards.

Bennett however was not at his home at the time of the protest, and told WBEN that the picket was misguided. "I don't think it was called for to have this in the first place, since my record as a regent is that we have sent increased funds to Buffalo every year" Bennett said. "But this is America the beautiful, land of the free, so they have a right to do it. I just wish they would have picked up the phone and told me specifically what changes they want."

Bennett also said that the Common Core does not increase the number of tests children have to take.

The picket comes the same week that New York State Education Commissioner John King will be in Buffalo for a forum on the common core, similar to the event held recently in Jamestown..
