New Year, New Bulbs!

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Many things change with the new year, in 2014, one of those things may be your light bulbs.

As part of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, it will be illegal to import or manufacture 40 and 60 watt light bulbs, which are some of the most popular bulbs sold.

"This act is encouraging people to go to light bulb types that waste less heat" New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) spokesperson Dayle Zatlin said. Nearly 90 percent of the energy used by incandescent light bulbs is given off as heat instead of light.

With new, more energy efficient bulbs, the hope is that less energy will be wasted, which may lead to savings in the long run. However, it isn't easy to convince people to change their bulb-purchasing ways. An incandescent bulb may cost under a dollar to purchase, but newer high-efficiency CFL bulbs can cost a few dollars, while LED bulbs can cost as much as $20.

"Incandescent's are the least expensive to buy but they're the most expensive to own" Zatlin said. "Residential lighting contributes on average, 12 percent of a household's total electric consumption, so if you're going to reduce that consumption, you're going to have significant savings over time."

If you just can't stand the new light bulbs you may want to stock up now. You will still be able to buy 40 and 60 watt bulbs at many stores until the supply runs out.

About these bulbs: http://grist.org/climate-energy/why-do-conservatives-like-to-waste-energy/
Stand your ground, Limbots! You're supposed to hate these bulbs, call 'em socialist and communist, shake your little fist at them. Get moving!

No
All CFL, although I will be switching to LED as I replace them. CFL's are easy to dispose of responsibly at any Home Depot or haz waste drop off site.

Love hate
I love saving energy and moreover money, but the Government telling me what I can and can't buy or use....... Just another little freedom wiped away

I use both
I still think the increased cost of the bulb outweighs any savings on your electric bill. And I have a number of cfl and led bulbs. What about oven and refrigerator bulbs though? CFL suck in the cold and I know leds hate heat and cfls probably do too

Different Ways to Look at Things
How many things are phased out over the years because they aren't as good as something new? You can look at it as a freedom taken away, but pick your battles. Being told how to think is a lot worse than lightbulbs.
