State of Emergency Declared as Blizzard Strikes WNY

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Western New York, with the exception of Niagara County, is under a state of emergency by Governor Cuomo. This as a blizzard warning took effect for Erie, Wyoming, and Genesee Counties.

A state of emergency mobilizes resources to local governments that otherwise are restricted to state use only and allows the Governor to suspend laws and regulations that would impede rapid response.

The Governor urged Western New Yorkers and residents in the Tug Hill Plateau region to avoid traveling and stay inside their homes until the worst of the storm has passed.

“As this new winter storm develops, bringing heavy snow and high winds, I strongly urge all citizens in these regions to exercise caution, avoid travel, and stay indoors,” Governor Cuomo said. “To ensure an effective and rapid response to this winter storm, I am declaring a state of emergency, so resources can get to communities where they are needed as quickly as possible.”

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has declared a State of Emergency in Erie County, due to the impact of a significant winter snowstorm with blizzard conditions and arctic cold which impacts public safety. The State of Emergency will remain in effect until rescinded by subsequent order.

All Erie County governmental offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 7, 2014; however, essential County employees should report to work. Employees who are uncertain of their status should contact their supervisor.

The Thruway from the Williamsville toll barrier to the Pennsylvania line is closed, the 219 and the 400 are also closed.
