Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Buffalo School Board President Barbara Seals Nevergold has announced plans to seek re-election as an at-large board member.
In a statement, Nevergold says, "In the last two years the District has responded to numerous challenges; I think more than any other District, in this State, has had to contend with. Yet, I believe that we have seen positive and incremental change in the indicators that signal improvement in educational outcomes. We are on the right track."
She also challenges a notion about Buffalo Schools. "And contrary to popular rhetoric, I do not believe that we have 25,000 failing students in failing schools. We have schools that have been deemed to be failing based on standardized tests. But we have many dedicated and hardworking teachers who are putting in the work to ensure student growth and achievement. And there are many children in those schools who are succeeding. It is unfair and untrue to label them as failing. We should support their successes and build on them," she adds.
She'll have competition from Sergion Rodriguez, who unsuccessfully challenged Byron Brown in last year's mayoral race. Carl Paladino says he's looking for candidates to run as well.
