John Bunz, Amherst Man who was NY's Oldest Inmate, Dies

(WBEN)  John Bunz, the Amherst man who was New York State's oldest inmate has died in jail according to The New York Daily News.

Bunz died of natural causes on Dec. 17, the News wrote Monday, citing state officials.

In September 2010 Bunz was sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison for battering his wife of nearly 68 years to death with a hammer inside their Amherst apartment in 2009. Bunz initially faced a more serious second-degree murder charge, but prosecutors agreed to the plea because of his age, then 90..

He admitted hitting 89-year-old Virginia Bunz about 30 times with a hammer after the couple argued at the retirement village apartment they shared.

Virginia Bunz's body was discovered inside her Amberleigh apartment  by a relative, who called 911. John Bunz  was found in the apartment with self-inflicted wounds and was taken to a hospital.

The couple lived in an apartment at the Amberleigh Retirement Community in the Amherst. Frank Miosi, executive director of the complex, said he knew them only in passing. Amberleigh is an independent living community, he said, meaning residents care for themselves.
