Amherst, NY (WBEN) - An Amherst toddler has been pronounced dead after an apparent homicide over the weekend.
At approximately 9am on Saturday, Amherst Police responded to Allenhurst Rd. for a report of a child not breathing and unresponsive.
The child, three year old Mayouna Smith was transported to ECMC where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined that the child had suffered from blunt force trauma. There were also indications that she had been subjected to physical and sexual abuse prior to the injuries that caused her death.
"We have noboday that we're calling a suspect," said Assistant Amherst Police Chief Charles Cohen. "There were two people in the apartment with her when she was found, her mother, and her mother's boyfriend." Cohen said that both were questioned at length following Smith's death. The boyfriend invoked his right to an attorney.
The investigation is continuing, no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Amherst Police at 689-1360.
