Brown Responds to Late Closing Criticism

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) After several school board members criticized Superintendent Dr. Pamela Brown for a late decision to close schools, Brown responded to the complaints.

"I had been in communication with my staff since the previous evening," says Brown. "We were monitoring the weather, we knew the forecast would be zero degrees last night, and the forecast was for the temperatures increase, so we agreed to continue monitoring." Brown says she also contacted a board member for perspective on a closing, which she says is part of the procedure. That procedure was communicated to the schools, and Brown says informing the media at 6am is standard procedure, though she does anticipate the possiblity of earlier closing calls. Brown says some bus runs begin early in the morning, and admits a 6am call to close is not the best plan.

Board member Carl Paladino tells WBEN he heard Brown was unreachable last night. Through spokesperson Elena Cala, Brown denied that. "No such thing," says Cala.
