Explosive Sound at Tonawanda Coke Just Quick Gas Release

Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) A bit of a scare for residents in the Town of Tonawanda. Police say they received numerous calls of an explosive sound at Tonawanda Coke.

Fire companies arrived and police say they learned Tonawanda Coke had a buildup of oven gas in a coke oven resulting in a safety valve activating. The release of the furnace gas resulted in the explosive sound. Tonawanda Coke is investigating why the gas built up, but police say the valve worked as designed.

Mike Durkin of Tonawanda Coke issued this statement: At about 12:00pm this afternoon there was an incident which resulted in a minor explosion and a small fire at Tonawanda Coke Corporation’s facility on River Road.  All operational and safety systems responded as designed, quickly bringing the situation under control.  Most importantly, no one was hurt in the incident. Operations are expected to be returned to normal today.

No injuries or damage is reported.
