(WBEN) Starpoint Central Schools delayed their opening one hour this morning at the elementary and intermediate schools as a precaution, while Niagara County Sheriff's deputies search the buildings and grounds for a possible gun.
Sheriff Jim Voutour emphasizes the shutdown was being done as a precaution after an empty holster was found outside a building overnight. At about 8:45am, deputies say a parent contacted the sheriff's office after hearing the school was locked down and he reported that he attended a sporting event Tuesday night at the school. While gathering several items from the back seat of his car prior to entering the school, he believes he grabbed his empty ankle holster by mistake and dropped it walking into the school.
High school students were not released off the buses until the all clear is given near 8:30 this morning, police say. Once that happened buses went to to pick up students in the younger grades.
