Flood Watch Thursday - Friday

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After our latest round of snowfall, the temperatures will begin to moderate and we're even expecting rain later in the week.  The National Weather Service has posted a Flood Watch for the entire region Thursday into Friday.  The combination of warmer temperatures, snowmelt and rain could lead to problems in the more flood prone sections of Western New York.

Here is the latest from The National Weather Service:

...SIGNIFICANT WARM UP WITH RAIN EXPECTED THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH
FRIDAY...

.A MILD SOUTHERLY FLOW OF AIR WILL PUSH NORTHWARD FROM THE
SOUTHEASTERN PORTION OF THE NATION THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY. A
POWERFUL COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH A WESTERN GREAT LAKES STORM
WILL SWEEP ACROSS NEW YORK STATE AND INTERACT WITH INCREASING
MOISTURE TO PRODUCE A PERIOD OF RAIN WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR
EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS.

THE COMBINATION OF RAIN AND TEMPERATURES THAT ARE FORECAST TO
CLIMB INTO THE MID 40S SHOULD RESULT IN GREATLY INCREASED RUNOFF
WITH SIGNIFICANT RISES ON AREA WATERWAYS. RUNOFF FROM RAIN
FALLING ON FROZEN GROUND MAY CAUSE FLOODING OF STREETS AND AREAS
OF POOR DRAINAGE.

PLENTY OF ICE IS ALSO IN PLACE ON AREA CREEKS. THIS WILL RESULT
IN AN ENHANCED RISK FOR ICE JAMS AND SUBSEQUENT FLOODING. THE
WARM WEATHER AND INCREASED FLOWS WILL BREAK THE RIVER ICE...WHICH
CAN THEN BECOME JAMMED WHERE THERE ARE CONSTRICTIONS IN THE
CHANNEL...SHARP CURVES...OR OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS.
