Medaille Merges Campuses, Layoffs Announced

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Facing a seven figure deficit, Medaille College is making some changes. Those changes include merging campuses and layoffs.

"By September 1st, we will move all instructional operations and support operations from the Amherst campus back to city center Buffalo," says Medaille President Dr. Richard Jurasek. Jurasek says the market has changed drastically where there is declining enrollment among graduate students, who attend classes in Amherst. "It is the adult student, who I think is becoming an endangered species in Western New York. There are far fewer graduate students" to cover the two dozen institutions in the region.

Jurasek says the merger also allows the Buffalo campus to be functional 24/7 with undergraduate studies during the day, and graduate classes on nights and weekends. "Being able to merge the two together so the physical plant can be used to the max, well, my gosh, that makes the best sense to create a great campus that feels just right to undergrads, shoulder to shoulder with graduate students," explains Jurasek.

Jurasek says layoff will happen three months from now. "Employees have been informed in writing of this for several weeks," says Jurasek. He adds if more right-sizing is needed, more employees will be laid off come fall and next winter.
