Amherst, NY (WBEN) - The Principal of Sweet Home High School was injured after she was struck during an altercation between students on Monday.
News of the altercation began to spread on social media Monday afternoon. Sweet Home Superintendent Anthony Day released the following statement on Monday:
At approximately 12 noon today - Monday, February 24 - four students were involved in an altercation in the 600 wing of the high school. In the midst of attempting to break up the altercation, building principal Joleen Reinholz was injured and required medical attention.
A number of building staff and School Resource Officer Greg Trotter responded to the situation immediately and the school district is cooperating fully with the Amherst Police Department’s ongoing investigation of the incident. We take this, and every incident within one of our school buildings, very seriously and will take every step available to see that those involved receive appropriate discipline.
I am thankful for the continued work of our school community that makes Sweet Home High School a safe building for our faculty, staff, students and visitors.
Shortly after, the Town of Amherst Police released a statement saying that an arrest has been made.
On Monday, February 24th the Town of Amherst Police Department received complaint of a fight involving multiple students in a hallway at Sweet Home High School. In the midst of attempting to break up the altercation, both a School Administrator and a teacher sustained injuries and required medical attention.
School Resource Officer Greg Trotter, with the assistance of patrol officers and detectives, responded and investigated the incident. 16 year old Keshaun Johnson of Amherst was arrested and charged with Felony Assault. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending. The school district is cooperating fully with the investigation.
