Sabres Trade Ryan Miller, Steve Ott

(WBEN/AP) - The Buffalo Sabres traded star goalie Ryan Miller and captain Steve Ott to the St. Louis Blues on Friday night for goalie Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a 2015 first-round pick and a second conditional draft pick.

Miller was expected to make one last start for the Sabres Friday night, but along with Ott was scratched from the lineup just before the team took the ice to warm up.

"Teddy (Nolan, Sabres' Coach) grabbed both of us about an hour before warmups," Ott said. "They told us to just kind of sit tight, and that something was kind of imminent."

Miller won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goalie in 2010, the year he was the Most Valuable Player of the Olympic tournament in Vancouver. He's the Sabres' franchise leader with 284 victories and 540 games.

"I've basically grown up here," Miller said to Buffalo reporters after the deal was finalized. "Over a third of my life has been in Upstate New York, so you can really say that this is where I grew up. This is where I've had a lot of moments in my life, and I'm obviously forever going to be tied to this part of the world, and I hope to continue that relationship as best I can moving forward."

The Sabres acquired Ott from Dallas along with defenseman Adam Pardy in exchange for Derek Roy on July 2, 2012. Ott had 18 goals and 26 assists in 107 games for Buffalo.

"The fans have been nothing but first class from the moment I put the jersey on here," Ott said. "Now I'm off to a new adventure."

Murray said on Friday that the second draft pick acquired in the trade can be as high as a 2014 first-round pick, and as low as a 2016 third-round pick.

The deal is the Sabres' first major move since general manager Tim Murray was hired in January after Buffalo fired Darcy Regier.

Stewart has scored 115 goals and 228 points in 377 career games with the Blues and Colorado Avalanche. Stewart has scored more than 10 goals in each of his six NHL seasons.

Carrier was selected by the Blues in the second round (57th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The LaSalle, Quebec native has 17 goals and 56 points in 59 games spent with Drummondville and Cape Breton in 2013-14, his fourth QMJHL season.

What are you thinking?

Wonder why they traded their goal tender. He helped them to 1st place in their division. May be able to resign Ott next season
