Trump Tweets: He WON'T Run

New York, NY (WBEN) Donald Trump has given the final word on his possible campaign for governor: he WON'T run in 2014.

In his Tweet Friday, Trump says "I have clearly stated that if the New York State Republican Party is able to unify I would run for governor and win. They can't unify-SAD!" He goes on to say, "While I won't be running for Governor of New York State, a race I would have won, I have much bigger plans in mind- stay tuned, will happen."

Michael Caputo was one of the Republicans recruiting Trump to run. "It's certainly disappointing, but it was a matter of time because a couple of weeks ago when our effort to recruit him began to run out of steam," explains Caputo. "He asked to line up a supermajority of Republican leaders to stand behind him. But after seeing what was out there and thinking about his own commitment to the race, he realized the state Republican party is too weak to stand behind one candidate." Caputo also contends there are Republicans who work for Cuomo. "He thought after looking it all over, he thought it was not worth the time, because he felt he would not be victorious."

Caputo believes Trump would have beaten Cuomo, and then would have been able to introduce pro-growth policies that would have added jobs in New York. "At some point he'll find a race that fits with what he wants to achieve. Unfortunately it won't be for the governorship of New York, and we'll all be worse off for it," says Caputo.

Trump would have at least one GOP challenger as Rob Astorino has begun his campaign for governor.
