Buffalo, NY (WBEN/AP) - Mustang Owners across the country are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their favorite car this week.

"When you say American, you know it's the true American sports car," Kopp said. "My three and a half year old son will pick out Mustangs on the road when we're driving. It's got a lot of heritage and fun associated with it, and a lot of enthusiasm. It brings people together."

For Kopp, being a Mustang fan is a family tradition. "My little boy is just as much an enthusiast as I am and just as much an enthusiast as my father is. It runs deep."

Kopp says he expects around 3,700 mustangs to show up this weekend in Charlotte.

Can the Mustang keep going strong for 50 more years? Mike Glados is president of the WNY Mustang Club, and while he knows younger generations aren't as fixated on cars as he once was, he sees the iconic sports car lasting.

"The younger kids in the crowd right now, they're not as car crazy as we were when we were their age, but I think there's still enough enthusiasm there to keep it going," Glados said.

Ford is building a limited-edition Mustang GT to honor the pony car's 50th anniversary.
The company will only build 1,964 special cars, honoring the year the Mustang first went on sale.
The 50 Year Limited Edition will come in one of the two colors of Ford's logo: white or blue. Buyers can choose a manual or automatic transmission.
There are special chrome highlights around the grille, windows and tail lights. The Limited Edition will also be the only 2015 Mustang with a faux gas cap badge on the rear, where the original cap sat.
Limited Edition cars will be among the first built when 2015 Mustang production begins later this year.
Ford is showing the Limited Edition at the New York auto show, which begins this week. Pricing wasn't announced.
