Right now ice cover over the eastern half of Lake Erie is 399 square miles, not enough to meet the criteria to lift the boom.

"They want it out by April 1st provided there is less than 250 square miles of ice, so we have to wait a little more to remove it," says Paul Yu with the Army Corps of Engineers.

Yu says observers conducting an aerial survey found the ice is slushy, a good sign of melting and the possibility of less ice on the lake.

"We have another scheduled ice flight Monday, and they tell me there's a good chance the lake might meet the criteria to lift the boom by Monday," notes Yu.

The latest the Ice Boom has ever been lifted was May 3, 1971.
