(WBEN) No one is planning on drilling for natural gas in Amherst, but just in case, the town is poised to ban the controversial technique known as hydrofracking.
The method uses a mix of water and other liquids to force trapped gasses to the surface. It's been accused of destabilizing the ground, and polluting the water table.
The Amherst proposal takes the additional step of banning the use of the byproduct -- the brine -- for de-icing town roads.
A resolution to draw up a new local law passed the board unanimously. Two competing proposals will be sent to the Town Attorney, to create a compromise version which will be put to a formal vote.
