Children Approached by Stranger in OP

Orchard Park, NY (WBEN) Parents are receiving a notice from Orchard Park Schools about children being approached by a stranger.

This is the district's note:

The Orchard Park Police Department reported to us that on Sunday May 4th at about    6:30 PM, 2 younger age females were riding bicycles on Hilltowne Drive in Orchard Park.  They were approached separately by a silver pickup truck operated by an individual described as a white male, with gray hair, bald on top, around 60 years old, salt and pepper beard, wearing a blue jacket. This male got out of the truck and asked one of the girls if she wanted candy. When the 2nd girl was approached she rode away. Thankfully, both girls arrived safely at their destination.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Orchard Park Police Department at 662-6444.

As an additional safety measure we have notified all of our transportation employees, bus drivers, and district staff of this incident.
This is the third separate incident in recent months so I am again asking you to please review the important points below and talk with your child about strangers, getting to a secure location and reporting any suspicious incident immediately to the police.  Below are some talking points to start this important conversation with your child:
  • Never talk to strangers or engage them in conversation.
  • Leave the area and get to a secure location (home, neighbor’s home).
  • Report the incident immediately to a parent or known adult or by dialing 911.  Parents should report any suspicious incident immediately by dialing 911 or by calling the Orchard Park Police at 662-6444.  The sooner the police are made aware of any incident, the quicker they can investigate and alert our community.
