Niagara Falls, N.Y. (WBEN) - The delayed removal of the Ice Boom meant a delay in an annual sign of Spring, the launching of the Maid of the Mist fleet in Niagara Falls. Today the wait is over as the boats are being launched and will be ready to carry thousands of tourists through the mist of Niagara Falls.
Normally, the removal of the ice boom would take place by April 1st and the boats would already be in the water. But this year's late boom removal delayed the launch of the fleet until today. There is always concern that too much ice in the river could cause problems for the boats. Maid of the Mist spokesman Kevin Keenan says "we don’t want any of the ice getting near the boats, because it could damage the boats.”
