VARIOUS SOUTHERN TIER ROADS CLOSED OR IMPASSABLE WITH HIGH WATER:  Check the latest here

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood WARNING for most of Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties, (lighter green on map at left)  but a more severe FLASH FLOOD WATCH (red on the map) for a section of big section of Chautauqua and some of Cattaraugus County where at least 3 inches of heavy rainfall fell overnight, with another inch forecast for Wednesday morning.   There is also  Flood Warning in place for the shores of Cayuga Lake.

Chautauqua County Emergency Management says there will be FLASH FLOODING  expected in the Chadakoin River area. Waters rising FAST.  Monitor and prepare to evacuate. Flash Flood warning is expected in the Chadakoin River area. Waters rising FAST.  Monitor and prepare to evacuate.

FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BUFFALO HAS ISSUED A

* FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR A PORTION OF WESTERN NEW YORK...
  INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES...ALLEGANY...CATTARAUGUS AND
  CHAUTAUQUA.

* THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING.

* A PERSISTENT AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS HAVE PRODUCED
  LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL ALREADY EARLY THIS MORNING ACROSS
  PORTIONS OF THE WESTERN SOUTHERN TIER. SEVERAL ADDITIONAL ROUNDS
  OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY TODAY ALONG A SLOW
  MOVING WARM FRONT. THIS MAY BRING MORE HEAVY RAINFALL ON
  ALREADY SATURATED GROUND.

* EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAIN MAY PRODUCE ADDITIONAL FLASH
  FLOODING OF SMALL STREAMS AND LOW LYING AREAS ACROSS PORTIONS OF
  THE WESTERN SOUTHERN TIER.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THE THREAT OF FLASH FLOODING EXISTS
ALONG RIVERS AND CREEKS. IF YOU ARE IN THE WATCH AREA YOU SHOULD
MONITOR WEATHER CONDITIONS CLOSELY. BE READY TO MOVE TO HIGHER
GROUND IF FLOODING IS OBSERVED OR A WARNING IS ISSUED.
A FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 700 AM EDT FOR
CHAUTAUQUA AND SOUTHWESTERN CATTARAUGUS COUNTIES...

AT 335 AM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR CONTINUED TO
INDICATE AN AREA OF TRAINING THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING VERY HEAVY
RAINFALL ACROSS THE REGION. RADAR ESTIMATES THAT 2 TO 3 INCHES OF
RAIN HAS FALLEN OVER THE PAST FOUR HOURS IN SOME AREAS. MORE
THUNDERSTORMS OVER LAKE ERIE MAY BRING AN ADDITIONAL 1 TO 1.5 INCHES
OF RAIN LOCALLY.

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM HEAVY RAIN WILL PRODUCE FLASH FLOODING OF
SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS AS WELL AS LOW LYING AREAS. FLOODING IN
TOWNS IS ALSO LIKELY AS STORM DRAINAGE BECOMES OVERWHELMED.

LOCATIONS IN THE WARNING INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO...
WESTFIELD...PORTLAND...STOCKTON...ELLERY...GERRY...JAMESTOWN...
CARROLL...AND SOUTH VALLEY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS AT NIGHT WHEN IT IS HARDER TO RECOGNIZE THE
DANGERS OF FLOODING. IF FLASH FLOODING IS OBSERVED ACT QUICKLY. MOVE
UP TO HIGHER GROUND TO ESCAPE FLOOD WATERS. DO NOT STAY IN AREAS
SUBJECT TO FLOODING WHEN WATER BEGINS RISING. NEVER DRIVE THROUGH
FLOODED ROADS...TURN AROUND DONT DROWN!
