Astorino Calls for Silver's Resignation, Cuomo Responds

Buffalo, NY (WBEN/AP) - During a campaign stop in Buffalo, gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino calls for the resignation of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Astorino says Silver has been lying repeatedly about his role in a development project, reported today in the New York Times.

"With governor Cuomo expected to be in Buffalo today, I am challanging him and calling on him to join me in demanding that Sheldon Silver, at the very least, step down as speaker of the Assembly," Astorino said.

Silver's office has dropped a request for a correction from the New York Times in connection to a decades-old project. The paper says Silver's office has backed down from a claim that another man named Sheldon Silver was involved in it - not the assemblyman.
The Times says it produced documents that showed Silver pushed city officials to build a mall in his Manhattan district instead of low-income housing. On Thursday, Silver told a state Democratic Party convention breakfast he "was forever confused" with lawyer Sheldon E. Silver, who died in 2001. The paper says Silver continues to say he was never a lawyer to the United Jewish Council, which tried to block the low-income project.
"This is a pattern of lying and not telling the truth," Astorino said. "It's a pattern of corruption that we have seen in the 21 years under this speaker."

After a campaign rally this afternoon in Amherst, Cuomo responded. "Mr. Silver is elected by the Assembly, and it's up to the Assembly to choose who its leader is," Cuomo said. "I could become an assemblyman, and then I'd have a vote," the Governor added jokingly.

Cuomo was in Amherst today with his newly selected running mate Kathy Hochul, it was their first event together since they accepted their party's nominations this week at the State Democratic Convention.
