Mother On Trial For Killing Daughter

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A mother is set to stand trial for murder for the suffocation death of her 8-year-old daughter nearly four years ago.

Candace Cartagena's non-jury trial begins Monday in Buffalo, where she was indicted last year in the death of Bianca Cartagena.

Family members found Bianca's body in November 2010 in her mother's bed in the Buffalo suburb of Amherst. They'd gone to check on the girl after learning she'd missed school.

Police later found Bianca's mother semi-conscious under a carpet in a backyard shed.

Court documents show Cartagena told police she'd taken pills in a suicide attempt while facing marital problems, unemployment and a house in foreclosure.
