Orchard Park, Police Settle Lawsuit Over Uniform Time
Orchard Park, NY (WBEN) The Town of Orchard Park has settled a lawsuit filed by 26 current and retired officers over compensation for the time it takes to put on and take off a uniform.
The officers claimed they had to come in early and stay late to change in and out of their uniforms, constituting overtime. The suit was filed in 2009 for $2 million, long before Patrick Keem became supervisor. "They have a locker room, and leave some of their equipment in that locker room. When they come in, most of them have to come in and put on their night stick, belt, etc," says Keem.
Keem says the settlement was reached for $210,000. The officers will receive $72,000 of that settlement money. He says he settled to move forward. "We just wanted to end this so there wouldn't be any animosity or ill feeling. It's behind me, it's in the past, and the $210,000 was a good number according to our attorney," says Keem.
