Sabres Buy Out Ehrhoff's Contract; Now A Free Agent

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Buffalo Sabres' GM, Tim Murray continued his rebuild of the team Sunday as defenseman, Christian Ehrhoff, was bought out by the club making the veteran blue-liner a free agent. Ehrhoff signed a 10-year, 40 million dollar contract in 2011 and reportedly was dissatisfied with the rebuilding situation in Buffalo. The Sabres' would have suffered salary cap penalties if Ehrhoff did not play for the duration of the contract, leading many to speculate that was the cause of the move.

Another potential cause was the Ehrhoff's attitude about the team. When Murray took moved into the GM's office, he stated that the team did not want to have any players on the team that did not want to be in Buffalo. By making this move, the Sabres are well below the salary cap floor for the upcoming season according to CapGeek.com.

The buy-out of Ehrhoff comes on the heels of the NHL Draft where the Sabres selected nine new players including Sam Reinhart who was the #2 overall selection.
