Dareus Scheduled to be in Court Today
Hamburg, NY (WBEN) Buffalo Bill Marcel Dareus is scheduled to appear in Hamburg Town Court today, charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving in connection with what police say was an illegal street race.
"This case right now is in its earliest stage, so the charges have not been fully developed," says attorney Terry Connors. Connors says Dareus' initial court date was adjourned until today. "If it's adjourned for the purpose of having his attorney ready, he'd appear, and at that point, they'd rearrange the schedule so further proceedings can be conducted at a point when everyone's prepared," explains Connors.
From there, Connors says the prosecution will need to provide the defense the charges, depositions, and witness affidavits. "The defense will then go look at the charges, determine if they are defensible, whether they can be mitigated, and negotiations will take place. If negotiations fail, proceedings go to a trial," says Connors.
A misdemanor conviction could lead to a year in prison, but Connors says that's rare. Traffic charges usually end up with fines and points on a driver's license.
