The Heat Not So Much On Tuesday

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Heat advisories up during the afternoon Tuesday were canceled midway through as a lake breeze kept temperatures from becoming uncomfortable in Western New York.

The heat advisory for Genesee and Orleans Counties began at 1pm, but were called off at 6pm. "Temperatures across the Niagara Frontier generally climbed into the mid-80s," says National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Hamilton. He says it was hotter east of Rochester, but the cool Lake Erie breeze kept things comfortable for those outside.

He says the heat index approached 100 in Orleans and Genesee Counties, but didn't reach that threshold to maintain the heat advisory.

That lake breeze also benefited folks from having to deal with destructive thunderstorms, which Hamilton says were almost a certainty 24 hours earlier.
