Gas Station Operators Accused of Stealing $1.2 Million in Sales Tax
(WBEN) -- Two Texas men who operate several gas stations in Erie County are arraigned on an indictment charging them with evading $1.2 million dollars in sales tax.
The Erie County District Attorney's Office announced that 51-year-old Ilias Maredia and 48-year-old Latif Maredia -- both of Stafford, Tex. -- are being held on $100,000 bail. The prosecution was seeking bail equal to or close to the alleged stolen amount.
The office says the sales tax was allegedly stolen over a four-year period ending in May 2012 through the brothers' seven gas stations.
If convicted, the defendants face a maximum of 12 to 36 years in prison.
