Jamestown, NY (WBEN) A 20-year-old man is facing multiple charges in connection with an assault on a six-month-old child. Jamestown Police arrested Steven Spencer on Saturday after they say he shook and struck his baby with an object while caring for the child in his Hedges Street residence. The baby was taken to Women's and Children's Hospital and is listed in critical condition. Meanwhile, Spencer was arraigned on multiple charges including 2nd Degree Assault and was remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail.
Spencer's father, Kevin, told reporters that his son told him that he tripped and fell onto the child, knocking the baby unconscious. Kevin Spencer said his son then took the child to the hospital when he had trouble breathing. Spencer's Aunt, Laura Spencer O'Neil, said that her nephew told police that he shook the child because,"...that's what they wanted to hear."
