Deputy Mayor Casey Steps Down to Work on Seneca Place Development

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Deputy Mayor Steve Casey is moving on from City Hall. He informed Mayor Brown he's resigning and taking a CEO spot with a retail developer.

He has resigned to head S&R Co. of West Seneca LLC, a $700 million development proposed for the old Seneca Mall in West Seneca. The firm is a new subsidiary of developer Scott R. Congel’s mall and property development company.

"He has been my First Deputy Mayor, the Chief Operations Officer of a $504 Million municipal corporation, and to turn around city government and to put the city of Buffalo on firm financial footing required discipline and focus," said Mayor Byron Brown.

Brown says he expects to have an idea on a replacement in a few weeks. Casey's resignation is not effective immediately.

“My decision to leave was very difficult but after 23 years in government, it’s time for change,” Casey said in a statement. “It’s time to think big and I believe in this West Seneca project.  It’s a great opportunity and will forever change Erie County.”

Brown and Casey share a long history that dates to their days in the administration of former County Executive Dennis T. Gorski in the 1990s when Casey served as Senior Executive Assistant, and also with the New York State Senate as Deputy Director of Communications, Legislative Director, Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor. He also served as Mayor Brown’s Chief of Staff during much of Mayor Brown’s tenure as a New York State Senator.

As First Deputy Mayor, Steve oversaw the Executive Staff, Inter-Governmental Relations, the Department of Communications, Administration and Finance, Human Resources and Community Service.
