At Basil Bail Hearing, Prosecutors Say Sager Near Death

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) -  A Buffalo bar manager accused of "launching" an Air National Guardsman down a staircase has been arraigned on a second-degree attempted murder charge.

Bail was set at $75,000 for 36 year old Jeffrey Basil. Basil is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, and tampering with evidence..

Basil has already pleaded not guilty to other charges in connection with the May 11 bar incident that left 28-year-old William Sager Jr. in a coma. Sager remains hospitalized, and during the proceedings Friday, Assistant Erie County District Attorney Christopher Belling said Sager could "die at any moment."

Prosecutors say that Basil attempted to cause the death of Sager by "launching him down the stairs," and later threw away video from the bar's in-house security system.

Two off-duty Buffalo police officers who'd been working as outside security were suspended after the incident at Molly's Pub.
