Small Plane Crashes in Airport Parking Lot

Cheektowaga, NY (WBEN) - A small plane crashed in the parking lot of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

A 39 year old father and his six year old son were on the small plane, which was being flown by 31 year old pilot Anastasiia Goldowsky. While on their way back to Prior Aviation from a sightseeing trip, the plane lost power.

Just before 3:00pm, the plane skidded across the terminal roadway into the west end of the airport's preferred parking lot. The father and son were not hurt. Goldowsky was taken to ECMC to be evaluated, but was not inured.

"It was supposed to be a nice trip for a dad and his son, but it didn't end up that way unfortunately," said Doug Hartmayer of the NFTA. "Fortunately, there were no injuries, no real property damage to speak of, and certainly we'll credit the pilot for actions above and beyond the call that were able to avert any major damage. The plane certainly could have landed on cars, could have landed on the terminal, could have landed on Genesee Street. It could have been much more serious than it was."

Hartmayer said there was only a minimal fuel spill, which was cleaned up quickly.

The plane that crashed was a Piper PA-28, which has a capacity of four occupants.

"I think we did a great job under the circumstances, and we were on the spot quickly, efficiently, and professionally," Hartmayer said about the response from emergency services.

While the crash did close off the main Genesee Street entrance to the airport, the NFTA was able to keep one entrance open for people to enter the facility. No flights were delayed during the aftermath.
