Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - On Friday, the Buffalo Public School District sent layoff notices to 63 teachers.
According to the district, the layoffs were both budget related and an effort to make the student to teacher ratio more consistent across all schools.
"This adjustment, as it appeared in the adopted 2014-15 budget, was based on an analysis of staff during the last school year that determined that many classes had low student enrollment. The reductions will provide consistent staffing across the district based on student population," the District said through a statement.
A news release also states that teachers who have been laid off will be the first considered for future openings.
The layoffs include: four guidance counselors, 12 ELA teachers, 12 math teachers, 10 science teachers, 11 Social Studies teachers, 10 reading teachers, two art teachers, and two instuctors for the hearing impaired.
