First Day of Classes for Some WNY Colleges
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) At SUNY Buffalo State and Canisius Colleges, the first day of class was Monday. Folks at both schools say it's been smooth sailing.
At Canisius College, Dr. Terri Mangione says new students got a rousing ovation as they started classes. "The Welcome to Canisius Walk where we have faculty and returning students lining the walkway to our Old Main building and there was a lot of cheering," says Mangione. The move in day was Thursday, and Mangione says everyone was in place in a matter of 3-4 hours. There's something new at Canisius to help students connect. "We have a new program centered around student interests and themes. "Nickel City, for example, for getting to know Buffalo, sports fans, flash mob dancing, cooking, and organic farming, and they're introduced to students with those same interests," notes Mangione.
It was also smooth sailing at SUNY Buffalo State. "I hear everybody's found their classes," says president Kate Conway-Turner. "Some had to ask a few questions, but they all found their way." Conway-Turner says there was a "sea of orange" for the convocation last week where they were urged to be ready for the first day. Move in day was also handled smoothly. "There was always that predictable moment where you look at what you bring and you wonder how you can get it in your room, but all the roommates have seemed to bonded, and most things got into the residence rooms," notes Conway-Turner.
For SUNY Buffalo State, it's a record number of new students, with nearly 2,000. Canisius says overall enrollment is down, but all goals have been met.
