'Cops' Crew Member Killed in Omaha Police Shooting

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Omaha police say officers' gunfire killed `Cops' television show crew member and a robbery suspect at a fast-food restaurant.

Police say the shooting happened Tuesday night after officers interrupted a robbery at a Wendy's in midtown Omaha. Police say the man fired shots from a handgun that turned out to be an Airsoft pellet gun.

No officers were hit, and police said no other suspects are being sought.

Langley Productions spokeswoman Pam Golum said Wednesday that Bryce Dion is the crew member who died. Langley Productions is based in Santa Monica, California.

"We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragedy and our main concern is helping his family in any way we can," Golum said. "Bryce Dion was a long term member of the `COPS' team and very talented and dedicated person."

Dion and the robbery suspect were taken to Nebraska Medical Center just a few blocks away, where they both later died.

"Cops" is a reality TV show that depicts law enforcement officers in action. According to its website, the show has been filmed in at least 140 U.S. cities and three foreign counties.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said in June that allowing "Cops" access to film in the city was part of his department's effort to improve its relationship with the public.

"I am proud of the department and want the professionalism of our officers on display for the city and world to see," Schmaderer had said.
