(WBEN) - On Thursday afternoon, New York State Police responded to a call of possible human remains being found on the shoreline in Lake Erie State Park in Chautauqua County.
Friday, examiners determined that the remains are of a human fetus, believed to be 18 to 20 weeks old. It was also determined that the fetus had been separated from its mother for about two to three weeks. The Erie County Medical Examiner's office says the cause of death was Intrauterine Fetal Demise.
"It would not be a homicide," said State Police Lt. Brian Ratajczak. "Given the age determined by the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office and speaking with District Attorney (David) Foley, it would not fall in to the category of a homicide."
Chautauqua County law enforcement are continuing the investigation to try and find the mother. Anyone with info contact State police
"It's a difficult investigation. However, we have our men and women working on it and we're working with the Parks Police and DA's office."
