Bear Facts: Luna OK, but has Broken Bones

(WBEN) The Buffalo Zoo says it will be a few weeks before Luna, one of two hugely-popular polar that have spiked zoo attendence this past year, is back on display, after a fall Saturday into the protective moat around her enclosure.

The Zoo issued the following update on her condition Tuesday morning:

Zoo’s veterinarian, Dr. Kurt Volle, took X-rays and determined that Luna had fractured her tibia and fibula above the ankle joint on her left rear leg. She sustained no other injuries from the fall. A pair of board certified veterinary surgeons from Sheridan Animal Hospital performed surgery to repair the fracture on Sunday.

Luna is recovering in the Zoo’s veterinary hospital. Zoo staff reports that she is alert and eating, and that she is able to walk. Luna will remain off exhibit for several weeks to restrict her movement while her leg heals.

Luna is one of two Zoo polar bears that have been attracting attention at the Zoo in recent months.

First put on display in the Spring of 2013 (L) , she was joined lasat year by Cali, an orphan polar bear rescued from Alaska and making a temporary home in Buffalo, while the Zoo works to raise funds for a new polar bear habitat.
