Buffalo News Sports Reporter Dies After Fall
|
Buffalo News sports reporter Tom Borelli died Thursday morning, approximately 2 weeks after he fell down steep press box stairs at All High Stadium and injured his head.
"I guess most people would know him from his Bandits coverage and his fantasy football columns," said News Managing Editor Howard Smith. "but he was just one of those (versatile) guys. We could have sent him to cover the presidential election and he would have done it, and done a really good job"
Borelli, 51, was covering a game when he hit his head on a girder at the stadium, and fell backwards down the stairs. He had been on a respirator at Erie County Medical Center, since the incident on Nov. 8, according to the News.
Smith tells WBEN it is believed to be the first time ever that a Buffalo News reporter died while on duty.
Borelli died near 5:30 Thursday morning. He is the son of retired longtime Buffalo News political reporter George Borelli, and Tom's wife Karen also works in the sports dept. at the Buffalo News.
"It's really a terrific loss for us, " Smith said.
The press box stairs at All High Stadium have long been a concern of several sportswriters, who describe it as incredibly steep and dangerous. The stairway was scheduled for repair during the latest round of reconstruction at Bennett High School and other schools, but removed from the budget and never repaired.
