Sakic Retires, Marchant Signs and Pronger Extends

Hitting the Sak-ic.

Joe Sakic retired from professional hockey on Tuesday.  The All-Star center hung up his skates on his 40th birthday.

His time spent in Colorado will define his legacy.  Sakic won two Stanley Cups with the Avalanche.  He won the Hart Trophy in 2001.  He scored 118 points that season.

Although his NHL career will come to an end with a press conference on Thursday, Sakic might have one more tournament left in him.  He was invited to Team Canada’s orientation camp next month.  Including Sakic on the roster makes sense, he was the MVP of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Sakic was not the only NHL player to make news Tuesday.  Chris Pronger signed a long-term deal in Philadelphia.  The defenseman gets seven more seasons.  It will cost Philadelphia 35 million dollars.

Todd Marchant won a Stanley Cup in Anaheim.  The Buffalo native will attempt win another one with the Ducks.  The 35-year old signs a two-year contract.  He scored 13 points in 72 games.
