August 5, 2009
Despite the threat of yet another thunderstorm, the 21st annual Taste of Williamsville was jam-packed when we arrived at Island Park on Main St. in the village. This one-day “savor the flavor” event is one- day long and was held on August 4.
We hooked up briefly with Al Yates, the 2009 Taste chairman. Not only does he live to eat like me, Al is a huge Buffalo booster and fan of Williamsville’s “charm and quaintness.” Al, a sales rep by day, is a native of Atlanta and absolutely raves about the food choices in our neck of the woods. Thrilled with the banner turnout, this Southern guy thinks that our challenging economy attracts more people to local events. Stay-cations are in, hence hordes of hungry folk make it a cheap--relatively, that is--night out.

Let’s get down to the business of food.
Al’s Chairman’s Choice was awarded to the Glen Park Tavern’s Lobster Bisque. The line was so long there we never got a spoonful of that goodness, but we made our way through the throngs and sampled some great grub: Chicken Rockefeller and Coconut Panna Cotta from Gatehouse Grill, Seared Ahi Tuna from Frog Hair, an absolutely delicious apple crisp served up by Creekview and some of the best pizza and eggplant caponatina I’ve sunk my teeth into from Militello’s. Some of our other best bites included the grilled veggie rolls (think samosa-burrito hybrid) from Go Veggies and the Creekview’s succulent chipotle bbq pork sandwich.

Wine was available for the first time at the Taste. Elvis imitator Terry Buchwald performed in the evening, which got me wondering: where were the fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches??
Good job by the restaurants and the large crowd—there was a festive spirit in the air….but luckily, no rain!
