Pittsford, NY (WGR 550) -- Justin Jenkins opened some eyes at St.John-Fisher tonight making two circus catches from Gibran Hamdan. Hamdan took a chance and hung the ball out there on the first one. Jenkins went up and pulled it away from two defensive backs. The second one was a 60-yard bomb that was deflected by Reggie Corner and then caught in stride by Jenkins. The WR has never caught a pass in two season as a Bill, but he still thinks he can contribute, "Practice is one thing, but you have to take it to the field on Sunday night, especially on national television it'll be a great honor for me to be out there when you're dedicating it to somebody like Ralph Wilson, Bruce Smith and other Hall of Famers, to go out there on shine on Sunday night would be very special." Jenkins did well during his NFL Europa season and now he wants to take the next step, "Everybody can make a play or two, that's why we're on this team because coaches feel I can make a play, but when you make plays it gives you confidence and gives the coaches confidence as well. Not just one play, but continue to make plays. That's kind of a goal for me that you have as a wide receiver." With Evans, Owens, Reed, Parrish, Hardy and Johnson ahead of him on the depth chart, it's going to be difficult for Jenkins to make the team. He said, "You have to make plays because there's always somebody in this group that can make plays so you don't want to go stretches without doing anything."
Dick Jauron says he's not ruling out Brad Butler, but the RT is extremely doubtful with a back problem. Jauron said the starters will play for a couple of series on Sunday, but there's a good chance rookie guards Andy Levitre and Eric Wood will play longer. Jauron cut things short tonight going less than 90-minutes. He's worried about over using the defensive ends with Copeland Bryan, Marcus Smith and Aaron Maybin out. Long snapper Ryan Neill took reps at DE. He did play some for the Bills there his rookie season. Jauron said he will not play there this year, it was only for practice. As far as the quarterbacks go Sunday Jauron said it's possible all four could play.
Getting back to the field it wasn't all cheers for Hamdan, he got sacked by CB Lydell Sargeant. Sergeant looked to have an interception of Matt Baker later, but C.J. Hawthrone made a last ditch effort to rip it out of the free agent's hands.
You don't hear much about Orchard Park's Jon Corto at linebacker, but he had superior coverage on a pass in the flat to Jonathan Stupar.
Not too many opportunities for Terrell Owens who had a key drop. Much of the practice was spent on Special Teams. Stevie Johnson just took part in individual drills.
The club has its final open practice before Sunday's game at 2:25.
HEAD COACH DICK JAURON
Training Camp PM Practice - August 6, 2009
On tonight's practice being cut short
It was planned to be a little short. We didn't do one of the drills that
we normally do. And then a number of the periods are timed, but a lot of
them are just numbers. So if they go through it quickly we get done
quickly, or if there are no mistakes, we can get done a little faster,
so it was good.
On seeing all four quarterbacks get reps
We've said all along that it's good to have the fifth game. It's good to
have the extra preparation time, if you get lucky. If the injuries leave
you alone and things go your way and hopefully they will.
(Do you plan on using all four quarterbacks this Sunday?)
We very well may.
On how long the starters may see action in Sunday's game
No not yet, but we think they'll play pretty much like they will a
regular first season game. So a couple series, but they'll be out there
though. They'll get some all of them.
On if the rookie guards will go a little longer
Yeah they may.
On impressions of LB Nic Harris
Very pleased with Nic. Athletically we all knew he was a very good
athlete. He played in secondary in college, moved into linebacker. He's
got good size for the position, he's fast and he's quick. We're really
anxious to see him play. We believe he's gotten better every day and he
looks good in the drills, but the drills are not like that game. So this
will be very good for Nic to get out on the field and play linebacker in
the NFL.
On LS Ryan Neill taking reps as a defensive end
Yeah Ryan's been great in that regard and he's athletic and he's played
defensive end, but we don't have plans to use him. He just helped us
out.
On LB Alvin Bowen coming back from his injury
Really Alvin's put in a tough year. The injury was a devastating one for
him. We didn't get a chance to see him perform at all really and stayed
with us the whole year and just worked in rehab and worked so hard the
whole offseason. So big opportunity for Alvin as he moves forward. He's
done well, but again we've got to see him in the game activities on both
defense and on special teams.
On it being a difficult transition for Harris to move from safety to
linebacker
Yes. I think it's difficult to move any position. With linebacker you're
just right in the middle of everything. It happens very quickly. I'm not
saying that in the secondary you can make false steps because they catch
up to you real fast, but there you've really got to be precise. You've
got to be on top of your leads and hit your mark all the time. Yeah,
it's a tough thing.
On newly signed DT Derrick Jones
He came in and had a good work out and we know him. Good effort guy and
this gives him an opportunity.
On what stands out so far in QB Trent Edwards
I think he's just gotten better and better all the time. And experience
in most cases is a great teacher. There's some people that seem to never
learn, but Trent's not one of them. I think he's a quick study so
everyday I believe he advances some. Over the three years he's really
learned a lot about what it takes to play in the NFL, what it takes to
succeed in the NFL, and we're very excited about getting going.
On the extra week in training camp helping the Bills' special teams due
to the rule changes
It'll be interesting to see. Bobby's [April] done so many different
things over his career, and there are times when we've had too many
guys. So it's not brand new for him certainly. So it's a change in some
regard. It's going to be interesting to see how it's called because
obviously there's going to be a mass of people meet at the ball. So it's
going to be more than four people aligned at some point. But I think
it's a great rule. I've been for it for a good while. It makes a lot of
sense to me.
On the extra game helping to get different coverage schemes
Yeah you know like every aspect of the game. Again the extra game this
year hopefully will be to our benefit we can just get a little lucky and
stay healthy and use the game to our advantage and the extra practice
time.
On what he sees from WR Justin Jenkins
Nothing that we haven't seen in the past. Justin is a guy you just
trust. He goes out and he works at it all the time, and he wants it all
the time. If it's 'teams' he'll give you everything he's got and find a
way to make the play. And on offense he'll give you everything he's got
whether it's running routes or blocking. Whatever it is, really a great
guy to have on our football team.
WIDE RECEIVER JUSTIN JENKINS
Training Camp PM Practice - August 6, 2009
On his long catch tonight in practice:
Gibby [Gibran Hamdan] actually threw it to me because the coverage just
wasn't right. We had talked about it earlier and if he got the chance to
make a big play we'd try it out and he threw it and luckily I came out
with it.
On sharpening out his route running:
You never get it to the best that you want it. I feel like I come out
here and work hard everyday. There's always something I can work on and
Coach Tyke [Tolbert] he helps me out with that. Right now I feel very
comfortable with that, there's always something you can do better and I
look forward to this team getting better and better everyday.
On big plays in practice allowing him to standout:
Everybody can make a play or two. ..... that's why we're on this team
because we feel like we can make a play. But you know when you make
plays, it gives you that confidence and it gives the coaches confidence
as well. So to make not just one play, but to continue to make plays,
that's kind of the goal that you have as a wide receiver.
On practicing with a group of talented receivers:
You've got to because there's always someone in this group, that in this
time that we have that you make plays, so you don't want to go stretch a
route or do anything so you kind of want to have your name in the pool.
And for me to be able to make plays tonight, I just want to be able to
sit with those guys.
On having to make those plays in this Sunday's upcoming game:
You definitely do. Practice is one thing but take it to the field on
Sunday night, especially on a night celebrating, it would be a great
honor for me to get out there especially when you're dedicating this to
someone like Ralph Wilson and Bruce Smith, and other hall of famers, you
go out there and shine on Sunday night out there it'll be very special.
QUARTERBACK GIBRAN HAMDAN
Training Camp PM Practice - August 6, 2009
On if having the chance to get reps during the five preseason games is
good for himself, QB Matt Baker, and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick:
Yeah, absolutely, I mean it's going to give us a chance to get out there
and play the game that we love, and hopefully perform at a higher level.
You know, more than anything, play well and hopefully get confidence in
the entire group and the team that god forbid something came up, we'd be
able to step in and help the team out.
On if he ever felt in previous camps that he didn't get enough reps:
Yeah, probably my first four years (laughs). You know, as a guy like me-
there's a lot of guys like me- that have bounced around quite a bit,
I've been very fortunate since I've been in Buffalo, that the coaching
staff has given me a fair opportunity to show what I can do, and with
the same token, I've raised my level of play to warrant that. I'd say
early in my career, I probably didn't deserve many reps, and that's
something that young players I think sometimes don't realize. They
always want reps, but do you really deserve it? I can honestly say that
early in my career I probably didn't deserve that many reps. I wasn't in
a position to help a football team win. Now, I think I deserve them.
On how many reps or series he deserves in the Hall of Fame game:
Well, you can't ask a quarterback how many series he wants to play,
because the answer is pretty much every one (laughs), but you know, it's
as many series as I get will be great. I just hope I can go out there
and help lead our team and just make some plays and give the fans
something to watch.
On a play made with WR Justin Jenkins at tonight's practice:
Well, I did very little there. Justin made the play, so as far as I'm
concerned that was a one player play and that was Justin Jenkins
basically being superman. He's a receiver that's really come along and
I'm really proud of him, and I'm proud of all our young receivers. We've
got a lot of top level receivers on this team now, and as a young
receiver that can be difficult because you're staring up, but at the
same time, they're learning from these guys. As a backup quarterback
who's going to be in there it's comforting to know that we've got so
many young receivers that can go up and make plays like that.
