Pittsford, Ny (WGR 550) -- Bills WR Terrell Owens was in pads and worked individually Monday night. Owens left the practice field before team drills began, still recovering from a toe injury that held him out of Saturday's preseason win over the Bears. Jauron said, "He said it felt OK. He said he could still feel it, but it felt OK." Jauron said there's no timetable and they'll just go day to day.
WR Stevie Johnson took part in team drills but wore a red 'non-contact' jersey. Jauron wanted him to practice, but did want him knocked around with the bad ribs. Jauron said "There was a lot of debate about it, he wasn't particularly happy about it, but it serves its purpose."
The following players watched Monday's work-out: WR James Hardy, DE Marcus Smith, LB Ashley Palmer, LB Pat Thomas, TE Travis McCall, RB Xavier Omon, S Bryan Scott, CB Drayton Florence, QB Matt Baker and WR Felton Huggins. Scott and Florence sprained knees in the Bears game. Jauron said, Bryan is actually pretty good and Bud Carpenter has said he's day to day. Drayton is not quite that good, but it's not as bad as it could've been and that's more into weeks and I'm not certain how many. It doesn't sound like five, but anywhere from two to five. it's right in that range." Scott did work on the stationary bike.
DT Corey Mace was participating in practice but left early with a limp. Roscoe Parrish and Shawn Nelson also left as they were feeling sick. Dick Jauron didn't know if it had anything to do with the heat. Jauron did say a few other player felt sick too.
Jairus Byrd participated in his first practice coming off the injured list. He paired with George Wilson on the second team at safety. Donte Whitner and Ko Simpson took first team reps. With Florence out, Reggie Corner was back as the nickel corner. The Bills had hoped Byrd could start this season with Whitner. He played CB in college so he's way behind. Jauron said, "He's missed a lot of work, he's missed the OTA's and he's missed the whole preseason. There's no way he can be where he wants to be, yah know where we need him to be missing all that work. We sure liked him in the college draft and we believe he's got a bright future and we know he'll work hard at it, but we know he's got a lot of work in front of him." Jauron didn't know if three weeks is enough to get him ready to play or start.
It was a pretty ordinary practice as it seems like the players are tired of camp and would like to get home to Orchard Park.
Terrence McGee returned kicks in practice for the first time in memory. It's been rather obvious the past two games that Dominic Rhodes and Bruce Hall are not even options in a pinch.
HEAD COACH DICK JAURON
Training Camp - PM Practice August 17, 2009
On WR Roscoe Parrish and TE Shawn Nelson leaving the field:
Both of them felt sick, and then Bud (Carpenter) actually told me a few
other players felt sick, so we may have something running through the
team.
On if the heat could have caused the problems:
I don't know. It wasn't that bad tonight. It could have been though.
On if WR Terrell Owens only participated in individual drills:
Terrell (Owens) did individual and that was about it. And then he stayed
out for awhile and then we took him back in and treated him. He said it
felt okay. He can still feel it, but he said it felt okay.
On the timetable for Owens' injury:
Don't have any. We'll just go day-to-day.
On if he will increase Owens' workload tomorrow:
Well, maybe. We'll just have to see how he feels.
On if Owens needs to practice after being in the league so long:
You know, the way we do it, talk to the player, talk to our medical
staff, talk to them about the protocol, ask where it is and then we just
proceed. We just take the next step. Clearly, he knows his body and he's
going to level with you on how it feels. So we'll keep taking the next
step in the protocol to get it better and we'll keep the dialogue going
too.
On if it is safe to say Owens will be practicing at least in individual
drills from now on:
No, I'm not certain it is because we'll have to see how he tolerated
this evening. And we'll talk to him tomorrow and then see where it goes.
Just keep taking the next step.
On if it was good to get DB Jairus Byrd on the field:
Yes. It was really good. We will keep our eye on him, but he's been
cleared for everything. It seemed like an eternity. I'm sure it seemed
like longer to him. He's been watching, but now he's back involved and
we're really excited about it.
On if he will have to take things slow with Byrd:
Yes. He's missed a lot of work. He missed all of the OTAs and has missed
some of thepreseason and everything involved.
On how he approaches preseason games with Byrd:
I don't know. We'll just see how it goes.
On the conditions of DB Bryan Scott and CB Drayton Florence:
Bryan (Scott), actually, is pretty good, and Bud has said he's
day-to-day, and Drayton's (Florence) not quite that good, but it's not
as bad as it could have been. And that's more into weeks, and not
certain how many. Doesn't sound like five, but anywhere from two to
five, so it's right in that range.
On what he's seen from DE Chris Ellis:
I really know that Chris (Ellis) has gotten better every game in the two
games we've played this year. He's practiced hard. He's gotten more
physical. We're trying to get him more and more physical. He's getting
stronger. We need him to do that. He's working hard. He's a hard worker
and he gives us real good effort on the field and he's been productive
in both games. So he's come a good ways and we're pretty happy with it.
On where LB Alvin Bowen is now compared to where he was before his knee
injury last year:
I can't really talk too much about him before the injury because it
happened so early in training camp. It was very disappointing,
obviously, for him and for us. He's done a lot of work to get back. He
stayed with us all off-season and he's getting back into it. He's played
more, played the most, obviously, this past week. And we'll see how much
progress he can make coming into this next game because he'll see a good
deal of action again.
On if he thinks Byrd has a lot of catching up to do:
Yes. There's no doubt. There's no way that he can be where he'd like to
be and where we need him to be missing all that work. We sure liked him
in the college draft. We liked him enough to do what he did and take
him. We believe he's got a bright future and we know that he'll work
hard at it. But he's got a lot of work in front of him.
On if three weeks is enough time for Byrd to be ready:
Hopefully. We'll see what happens.
On if WR Steve Johnson wore a non-contact jersey in order to allow him
to continue practicing safely:
That was it. That was the sole intent. It was a lot of debate about it
and he wasn't particularly happy about it, but it serves its purpose.
RUNNING BACK MARSHAWN LYNCH
Training Camp PM Practice - August 17, 2009
On if the heat during practice gets to him:
No, these weather conditions, you have to deal with it. It's not like
just because it's hot they're going to cancel practice. You have to get
it right.
On if he feels like the clock stops on September 5th:
No, it doesn't stop for me. I'm just not going to be able to participate
with the guys out there but as far as working out, it still continues
for me. A lot of it will be runs, set up cones down the field and making
moves on them, individual work, running, lifting, continuing to do the
same things just probably not too many team periods.
On if it will be tough mentally to sit out during those three games:
No, I have some time to get mentally prepared for it and playing in
these preseason games, I'll get on the field. I don't think too much it
will be tough.
On if he will have fresher legs at the end of the year:
Well as hard as I run, I don't know if they'll be fresh legs, but
they'll be pretty ready.
On how many gears the no huddle approach can have:
Well, it's endless. We have the bench to do it, to change the pace. We
have a group of receivers that we can get in and out and keep the pace
going. I don't think we'll miss a beat at running back. From what you've
seen, all of our running backs have been toting the rock pretty well, so
as long as we just keep that up, we'll be solid.
BUFFALO BILLS DEFENSIVE BACK JAIRUS BYRD
PM Practice- August 17, 2009
On practicing tonight:
It really feels good to get out here and work up a sweat and be around
the guys.
On being behind:
I guess in reps I guess a lot. But it's good. The first start was today,
getting out there seeing the reps, knocking the dust off so it's good.
On having to wait to practice:
It was tough, but it's here now, so I don't think about the past. I'm
just moving forward. I'm excited and ready to go.
On having to play catch up:
Yeah - I feel like I'm behind just because of the time I've missed, but
like I said I'm here now, ready to roll and jumping in the mix.
On doing anything extra to catch up:
Yeah. I guess staying after and doing the work with the one on one's
with [James] Hardy just to help him. But really it's just being out on
the field now just getting reps, that's pretty much the biggest way to
catch up is getting reps and seeing stuff.
On the pro level being different after this first practice:
It's a little different, like I said I've only been through one so I
have yet to see. Hopefully I'll get some reps in this week's game coming
up and I'll really get to see how different it is. But I'm excited just
to be out here running around.
On having to adjust any personal goals because of his injury:
No, nothing's changed. It's the same. No goals have been altered or
changed just because of a set back. If it's meant to be then it'll
happen.
WIDE RECEIVER LEE EVANS
TRAINING CAMP - AUGUST 17, 2009
On practicing in the heat:
You just have to stay hydrated. You have to pump a lot more fluids
before and after practice so that you can be hydrated and rejuvenated
for the next thing.
On it being refreshing to practice under the lights:
Oh yeah, no doubt. It is an ideal day to have a night practice so that
you are not out here in the mid day in the sun. It will be a nice
little change-up to work on some things from the other night.
On the offense's progression through training camp:
I think that it is a lot better, even from last week's game. There was
an improvement from last week's game. Some things that we wanted to
focus on, to get better at and I think we did that. We still have to
build on some of the things that we did well and some of the things that
we did wrong. I think that we really have a chance to see this, the
no-huddle, mature a little bit. We still have a ways to go, but it is
on a decent track.
On if he feels like he is getting more into the flow of the new offense:
Yeah a little bit. There are many different ways that we can run the
offense, going up-tempo or slow it down. It is about picking your spots
really, and finding the match-ups. Right now we are just running
through the logistics of it and making sure that everyone is on the same
page and making sure everyone is talking. Then, we will get into game
planning when the season starts.
On if it affects him to have to constantly run routes:
Yeah it does. I can't say that it doesn't, but from practice you are
kind of used to it. You kind of understand what to expect and how you
need to do certain things. I think that it is certainly an advantage
for us and like you said you can see it in the defense
On if there are situations on the field where he wants to huddle as an
offense:
Oh yeah, sometimes no doubt. It is like we are on the two-minute drill.
You can only do it for so long before you get out of breath. At least,
running our normal offense, we kind of know what to expect and how we
want to run it.
