Sabres Score Late To Top Red Wings 3-1

Detroit, MI (WGR550)  -- Three third period goals were enough for the Buffalo Sabres to top the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena in the team's second preseason contest.  Derek Roy, Thomas Vanek and Paul Gaustad all scored in the final period to lead Buffalo to the victory.

The Sabres were held to five shots in the first period.  Buffalo starting netminder Ryan Miller stopped all thirteen Detroit shots in the opening stanza.  Mike Grier took the only Sabres' penalty in the first, while the Red Wings took a pair of penalties in the period also.

Johan Franzen broke the scoreless tie with a wrist shot that went past Miller to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead midway through the second period.  The Wings outshot Buffalo 14 to 5 in the middle period, making the two period shot total 27 to 10 in favor of Detroit.

Roy's power play marker in the third period tied the game 1-1 between Buffalo and Detroit.  Craig Rivet and Jason Pominville assisted on the score.  Vanek tipped home the go ahead goal just minutes later to give the Sabres the lead.  Vanek tipped home a shot from by Chris Butler the point past Red Wings netminder Jim Howard for the lead.  Gaustad added an empty net goal to cap off the win.  Gaustad's goal was unassisted.

Miller made 42 saves on 43 Detroit shots.  The Michigan-native was between the pipes for the entire game to pick up the preseason victory.  Red Wings goalie Jim Howard had 17 saves on 19 Buffalo shots in a losing effort.

The team heads to Washington for their third preseason game on Monday night.  The Sabres and Capitals face off at 7 p.m, and you can catch all of the action on WGR Sports Radio 550.  For the latest Sabres news and notes heading into the 2009-2010 regular season, stay tuned to WGR Sports Radio 550 and wgr550.com.
