(WGR 550) -- They may be winless, but the New York Islanders have proven some NHL mettle during their 0-1-3 start.
No. 1 overall pick John Tavares has five points in four games, all losses, but New York has battled under second-year bench boss Scott Gordon. All four losses have been of the one-goal variety, and the Isles will look to get 'W' No. 1 during a 7:30 p.m. Friday contest in Buffalo.
Former Sabre Martin Biron is one of New York's netminders, and is 0-1-1 with a 2.53 goals against average and .900 save percentage. Fellow goaltender Dwayne Roloson has slightly better numbers.
On Buffalo's side, they may have to fight to keep the "0" in the regulation loss column without Thomas Vanek, who is fighting an upper body ailment that was initially expected to keep him out "weeks." Vanek has only missed 10 games in four-plus seasons with the team. Nine came last year, while the other was during his rookie season.
Ryan Miller's early numbers have been splendid. His 1.24 GAA and .945 save percentage both register second in the National Hockey League. Derek Roy leads the team in points with five, but has yet to crack the egg standing in the goal column.
