County Clerks Continue to Fight New License Plates

scichon@entercom.com

Buffalo (WBEN)- County Clerks from across New York State met in Herkimer County Thursday to discuss their next move in the fight against new license plates for New York motorists.

Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul tells WBEN that there are currently over 100,000 signatures on a petition asking state leaders to reconsider the plan for new tags, which many are calling a money grab. "All across the state, county clerks will be presenting to members of the legislature, and to the Governor's office Monday morning (these on line petitions)," says Hochul. "We want to get word out to our constituents that if anyone wants to participate in the petition effort, there is still time."  The petition can be found by  clicking here.

"We feel we're making progress, this issue is very much resonating in Albany right now. People have heard our message," Hochul says, and while she realizes the budgetary problems facing the state, she says this is one measure the people clearly don't support.

Further, there are still thousands of the current plates that have yet to be issued. Hochul says,  "Let us run through the current inventory, and hwne the time comes that we're out of them, then its time to look at this."

What do you think of the new license plates?

WTF?
I just registered a vehicle last month and got a set of new plates. Now I'm going to have to pay for new plates again less than a year after I registered the vehicle? really? WTF? Can we get a little more creative in raisinf revenue? Try cutting expenses, If you don't know how, move over and let someone who does lead this state. There are thousands of us who had to learn to cut expenses and go without. Try it. You just might find that it is possible!

Mr. Bruce Karas
I think this is yet another scam to take more of our hard earned money for upstaters. Why doesn't Albany increase the subway fare down State? How about a new tax on taxis? What about having a manditory cut in personnel in Albany to save money. Ms. Hochul, I believe you are fighting the "good" fight and I support you 100% Please continue fighting for the Upstate Region

I read that the original reason for new plates was that the present plates are 10 years old and that they are starting to look bad. What a load! When was the last time you saw a bad plate? License plates are made so well that they usually look almost newand outlast the car they are on.

What are you thinking about the latest reports about Gov. David Paterson?
  It's just dirty politics
It's legitimate and should be exposed
