Weis a good fit?

(WGR 550) -- The National Football Post's Robert Boland has some intriguing thoughts about former Notre Dame and New England mind Charlie Weis and a possible move to Buffalo.

Weis is going to make $18 million not to coach the Fighting Irish for the next few years, and Boland said this could fit into a plan to bring Weis and a hot coaching prospect to Buffalo in an "arranged marriage" of power.

"This makes Weis potentially a very cost-effective option, either as a head coach or a coordinator, since Notre Dame will essentially be subsidizing him for the next six years. This might make him an attractive head coaching candidate in Buffalo, where he was a finalist six years ago and where it’s believed that only owner Ralph Wilson’s inability to meet Weis’ salary demands kept him from taking the job...

People looking for Weis as a coordinator clearly will look to his past relationships, meaning New England, where his former coordinator title has been vacant since Josh McDaniels left; Kansas City, where he shared an office for three years with Todd Haley; and Cleveland, where he and Eric Mangini were on staffs together in New York and New England and where he coached Brady Quinn at Notre Dame. There is also talk about Carolina, where Weis has maintained a close relationship with John Fox.

However, one wild-card possibility may be that Weis, who is represented by coaching super-agent Bob LaMonte, will be paired with another LaMonte client in an arranged marriage of head coach and coordinator. This could be with a first-time head coaching prospect or a current head coach from LaMonte’s stable whose team is challenged on offense. In this category, Fox, Jim Mora and Mike Singletary come to mind. This has happened before with some success with McDaniels and Mike Nolan in Denver. The possibility that a leading first-time head coaching candidate like Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier could be paired with a proven offensive mind like Weis, whose signability is enhanced because he’s being paid by Notre Dame, might just be enough to put Frazier over the top in searches after the season."
