Dean: Some Woods Media Coverage 'Overblown'

When it comes to media coverage of the Tiger Woods situation, one area journalism dean says a part of it is overblown.

Lee Coppola, Dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at St. Bonaventure University, says the tabloid media has gone overboard. "Both TV and print tabloid, have overblown every aspect...since it occurred," says Coppola. In particular, the accusations of affairs by women. "These allegations by women coming out of the woodwork, claiming they've had affairs with TIger Woods, who knows if it's true? It seems to me these women, all they want is exposure, attention, maybe money, I don't know about that either," contends Coppola. If he were news director, he'd tell his staff to stay away from that part of the story.

But Coppola says there are other aspects the mainstream media have covered that are newsworthy. "Tiger Woods is probably the most recognizable athlete in the world, and having an automobile accident is news. The fact his wife was there at the time and the circumstances of the accident is also news and should be covered. The revelation he was having an affair and he may be a philanderer, that may be news because that may be a reason for the accident," notes Coppola.
